When you are looking into having occupancy motion sensors installed in your home, find out the models with features that you know will come in useful.

While occupancy motion sensors spare you the trouble of manually turning lights on and off, especially in areas that are occupied only sporadically (e.e bathrooms, store rooms, garages), these motion sensors can prove annoying if they are not properly designed.

One handy feature for an occupancy motion sensing device to have is a daylight sensor. This lets the motion sensor detect when the room is receiving sufficient sunlight, so it need not turn the light on at that time even if someone is in the room. Without a daylight motion sensor, an occupancy sensor will trigger the lights every time you enter a room, even if sunlight is streaming in and you do not need the artificial lighting.

Manual controls are another useful feature to have for the occupancy motion sensor. At times, you may have reason to keep the lights on even when no movement will be detectable in the room, or no one is occupying it. There will also be occasions when you will want the lights off immediately upon your leaving the room, and not wait for the occupancy motion sensor timer to do it.

An occupancy motion sensor should obviously allow the user to specify what sort of timing is desire between the movement it last detects a living presence in the room, to the time it turns the lights off.

It is also handy if the occupancy motion sensor can be programmed to turn the lights off within a few seconds if it detects only a fleeting presence. For instance, if you are merely passing through an area and not lingering in it, why would you want the light to remain on for a whole 15 or 20 minutes after you have passed through?
